We’re just a couple of days away from the Disney annual D23 Expo and that means the rumors are swirling about what is in store for the coming years at Disney World.
A lot of those rumors have started to leak in the last few weeks. Some of them seem pretty legit, others seem to be a pie in the sky type of dream (like the Star Wars hotel).
Today, I’ll take a moment to break down the five rumors I’m most excited about hearing about, whether it’s this week at D23 Expo or down the road.
Oh, and if you want to hear a podcast I was on where we discussed these rumors, Click here.
- New attraction in France pavilion in Epcot
So, we know something is coming to the France pavilion. Disney has applied for permits behind the pavilion and the rumors are pretty strong that it will either be a Ratatouille ride or a Beauty and the Beast ride.
My money is on Ratatouille, because there’s already a model in place (at Disneyland Paris) and it would be a good addition to the France pavilion.
I know Beauty and the Beast ride has gained some steam in the rumor mill recently, but I believe because there’s already a show at Studios and an entire area at Magic Kingdom devoted to Beauty and the Beast that the Ratatouille idea makes more sense.
- Guardians of the Galaxy roller-coaster replacing Ellen’s Universe of Energy in Epcot
Again, like the France pavilion, we know something is coming. We know Universe of Energy is going away and Disney has filed permits for construction in the Universe of Energy backstage area. The rumors have been pretty rampant that Disney is promising a HUGE transformation of Epcot, similar to what they did with California Adventure in Anaheim.
In order to make good on that promise, I believe they will need to add another E-ticket thrill ride and what better franchise than Guardians of the Galaxy. The second movie has done extremely well and it gives Disney a chance to flex its Marvel muscle in Orlando.
It would fit in perfectly in that area with Mission Space and Test Track and completely overhaul the Future World area by adding a premium attraction.
- Tron Cycle ride coming to Magic Kingdom/Disney World
This rumor is a fairly new rumor and right now it’s only confirmed that it’s indeed a rumor. LOL The Tron Lightcycle Power Run attraction in Shanghai Disney has been well-received and a lot of people have been speculating that it’s only a matter of time before we see that attraction stateside.
The biggest rumors seem to have the attraction going in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom. One rumor has it replacing Tomorrowland Speedway. Another rumor has it going behind Tomorrowland Speedway, right next to Space Mountain. There’s also a rumor that has it going in Universe of Energy area in Epcot, but I believe the Guardians rumor is stronger.
I lean toward it replacing the Speedway, because I have a hard time seeing them putting it right next to Space Mountain. They’d most likely have to alter the train route to fit it into that area, also.
Plus, Tomorrowland Speedway, as much as my kids love it, is a very outdated attraction.
- New country pavilion (Brazil?) being added to Epcot’s World Showcase
Another one of those rumors that seem to pop up every couple of years is that Epcot will announce another country to the World Showcase. It’s common knowledge that the area around World Showcase has enough space to add as many as nine countries, if Disney would choose.
The flavor of the month this time is Brazil being one of those countries. It’s received a mixed welcome from Disney fans. I think the idea of a nice Brazilian steakhouse would be nice, but not sure how I feel overall about the addition.
Frankly, I’m down for whatever Disney wants to add to the World Showcase. The more to explore, the better.
- The Great Mickey Ride replacing Great Movie Ride in Hollywood Studios
I just saw this rumor this morning, so not completely familiar with it, but it sounds awesome. Great Movie Ride is one of my favorite rides, nostalgia-wise, but I honestly couldn’t tell you the last time I rode it.
There’s been a lot of speculation about Great Movie Ride getting a major overhaul, so I definitely see something happening in this spot. Disney’s contract with TCM is up in 2018, so I think the idea of going their separate ways makes sense.
The Great Mickey Ride will reportedly pay tribute to the Big Cheese himself and will utilize the popular trackless ride system that Disney uses in Mystic Manor and Ratatouille. If you’re not familiar with that system, it’s similar to the omnimover system found in Haunted Mansion, Nemo and Friends, etc., except that it’s not on a track. Instead, the vehicles travel based on electronic sensors. That allows the designers more flexibility.
Not sure how I feel about this rumor, yet. I would love to see Great Movie Ride get an upgrade, maybe even some new scenes. But at the same time, I like the idea of a ride devoted to Mickey. Believe it or not, he doesn’t have a ride in any of the four Disney World parks. Crazy to think that, huh?
So, those are the five rumors I’m most excited to hear more about (if they’re true). Thanks again for reading.
